Energy Transformation in Serbia: Flexibility Aggregation, Data Insights, and Regulatory Framework

On September 26, 2024, PowereX had the pleasure of hosting an impactful workshop “Energy Transformation in Serbia: Flexibility Aggregation, Data Insights, and Regulatory Framework” in Novi Sad. The event brought together prominent experts, industry leaders, and policymakers to discuss the future of Serbia’s energy landscape, focusing on the critical themes of flexibility aggregation, data-driven insights, and the evolving regulatory framework.

The workshop was enriched by the presence of Michal Pavúk, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Slovak Republic to the Republic of Serbia, who delivered inspiring opening remarks. His speech highlighted the importance of fostering innovation within the energy sector to meet the challenges of the ongoing global energy transformation. Mr. Pavúk emphasized how crucial it is for both Serbia and Slovakia to collaborate on modernizing energy systems and embracing sustainable solutions.

We were also honored to have Vanja Petković, Member of the City Council of Novi Sad, in charge of Environmental Protection, Sustainable Development, and Energy Efficiency, share her insights on Serbia’s energy transformation. Her remarks underscored the local government’s commitment to promoting energy efficiency and integrating renewable energy sources to achieve a more sustainable future.

Key Highlights from the Event:

1. Comparative Analysis of Serbian and Slovak Electricity Markets
Peter Laurinec from PowereX delivered a compelling presentation comparing the electricity markets of Serbia and Slovakia. He highlighted the differences in structure and market dynamics, focusing on opportunities for flexibility aggregation and mechanisms to manage energy imbalances within Serbia’s power market.

2. The Impact of External Drivers on the Power Grid
Monika Jovic from Schneider Electric explored the external factors reshaping the power grid, such as the electrification of transportation and households, the growth of renewable energy sources, evolving regulatory landscapes, and rising customer expectations. She emphasized the urgent need for increasing grid capacity and enabling the integration of more renewable energy sources to meet future demands.

3. Regulatory Tools for Flexibility in the Electricity Market
Andrej Juris from Energy Community provided an in-depth analysis of the regulatory tools needed to foster flexibility in the electricity market. Drawing on examples from the European Union and the Energy Community, he offered practical suggestions for Serbia to create a regulatory environment conducive to energy market flexibility, which is essential for integrating renewable energy and managing supply-demand dynamics efficiently.

A Collaborative Effort

The workshop was a success, thanks to the collective efforts of our knowledgeable speakers, co-partners, and participants. Special thanks go to ICT Vojvodina Cluster for co-organizing the workshop and for the great cooperation during the project implementation. It was an enriching experience for all involved, with deep discussions on critical energy topics and the exchange of actionable ideas for shaping the future of energy in Serbia and beyond.

The project “AI-driven Virtual Power Plant feasibility in Serbian environment” is implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through the Slovak Challenge Fund, with the financial support of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic.

PowereX extends a heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to this event, and we look forward to continuing the conversation around energy transformation. Together, we can create a sustainable, flexible, and efficient energy future.
